Launched in 2006, Roblox’s popularity among gamers 8-years-old and up has exploded, and it is now one of the top online entertainment platforms for kids and teens, according to comScore.
Entertainment Platform for Play. Roblox games are social, multiplayer experiences. In fact, Roblox could be your child’s first experience with digital socializing. Players can comment and converse with other players inside a game and also chat with their friends on Roblox.
There are literally millions of user-generated 3D games on Roblox. Most games are free to play, while others cost “Robux,” the online currency that players use to buy games and items such as clothes or accessories.
Roblox’s Social Features. You can restrict your child from chatting and messaging with others on Roblox. Whatever settings you choose, we recommend discussing your decision with your child. If you limit Roblox’s social features, consider revisiting these restrictions as your child grows and matures.
ROBLOX is in a weird spot in terms of the official age rating. While UK’s Game Age Rating organisation PEGI has rated it a 7, meaning it can be played by anyone aged 7 and up, and ESRB rating it E10+ for anyone 10 and up, all of the content on ROBLOX is User Generated Content, or UGC.
ROBLOX automatically makes an account safer for those aged under 13 years of age, so when setting up an account, make sure to set the child’s account as their age, and not yours. If they’re above the age of 13, you can still enable parental controls, but it’s not automatically active like on a younger child’s account.
If you’re on the home menu on ROBLOX, head to the Settings menu in the top right. Once here, head to the Privacy tab. Once here, you can change the contact settings of your child’s account.
It’s important to note, firstly, that there are bad people online. Pretty much any corner of the internet can have people with malicious intent, which is why it’s important to monitor your child’s account regularly and employ the proper precautions to the account settings.
Parents, don’t worry, your instinct to protect your child, online and offline, is the best safety tool. Use your own due diligence when monitoring or securing your child’s account and you’ll likely do more than enough to keep them safe on ROBLOX.
