There are a very few games that does allow multiplayer without Gold up to a certain point. I don't know all the games but I’m 100% sure that latest Just Dance games doesn't require Gold subscription for World Dance Floor, as well as in The Crew (1 as I’m not sure about 2) you can see and collide with other players, but only in free roam. That's all I know.
On the other hand though, you can play multiplayer Xbox games on PC without an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Other than that the only way you can play co-op without membership is like in the olden days when you had your mate (s) round and you played 2 - 4 player mode (but only if the game has split screen or supports it).
Make sure you or your kid chooses a game mode that allows local split screen play. That way you won't need a Gold membership. However, if your grandchild wants to play online against multiple other players, a Gold membership is necessary.
The Gold subscription is only for playing multiplayer (online games against other players) Some games do not have the single player type game mode and require the Gold subscription to be played.
