On the one hand, it's a huge gamer base. And "Minecraft", which is like the closest competitor game to "Roblox", has signed up over 400 million players in China through a partnership with NetEase.
And so from that, they don't necessarily need a big IP. They just need these young gamers who eventually age and hopefully stay to, you know, have an emotional connection with these creators that kind of they've grown up with who've built these experiences and expanded these experiences.
MATTHEW KANTERMAN: Sure. "Roblox" is actually a game development platform. So developers can go in and use the tools that "Roblox" creates to make experiences. And then mostly young people go in and play the experiences with their friends. It's kind of like a shared 3D world that they can all hop into and chat with each other. And so it's kind of like a little bit of social networking and a little bit of gaming all mixed together.
Joining us now to talk a little bit more about this company is Matthew Kanterman. He's an analyst over at Bloomberg Intelligence. Matthew, thanks for joining us today. Let's just start with maybe the 101 for boomers like me who don't have kids who are on "Roblox" all the time on what the company does, and where it sits within the video ecosystem, which has obviously had a very interesting year because of COVID.

Although Roblox has been around since 2006, it has taken the better part of a decade to really catch on. Almost all of its growth has happened over the past three years, as more developers have flocked to the platform and the number of players has grown. In its prospectus, Roblox features pictures of some of these developers, none of whom are older than 30. One, a 21 year-old named Alex Balfanz, made enough money from Jailbreak, a game he co-created, that he was able to cover four years of tuition at Duke University.
Soren, it turns out, is just one of the 32.5 million “daily active users” on the platform — a number which has nearly doubled over the past year, according to the three-hour video stream that CEO David Baszucki hosted for investors last week.

There’s also the fact that Soren has taught himself how to code using Roblox’s own tools and has published about 50 games. None of them have attracted more than a few players, but the whole process still seems more educational than just slipping a cartridge into his Xbox.
