“We messed up today and you were right to let us know,” said Microsoft. “Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”
In a follow-up FAQ (opens in new tab), Microsoft confirms that "effective April 21, 2021, all Xbox players can access online multiplayer for free-to-play games on their console at no charge. For these games, an Xbox Live Gold membership is no longer needed.
Reports have claimed time and again over the last couple of years that Xbox Live Gold is going to be discontinued permanently down the line, though Microsoft has previous said that it has no such changes planned.

Xbox Live is one of the most reliable gaming networks available and in order to achieve that you have to pay for servers and engineers who optimize them/keep them running. With free games with gold you earn that money back and then some due to able to get up to 40 free games a year.
