The feature was first released on February 18, 2021, for one hour in Germany to test the feature to a relatively small audience. Players outside of Germany could have used a virtual private network to access the update. During this release, some players created display names containing inappropriate phrases or symbols.
Many users have criticized display names for making it easier to impersonate other players. Sometimes, games only show their normal username instead of the display name. In an effort to prevent impersonation, usernames of some famous YouTubers and administrators were censored in the May release of the update.
Sometimes, if a user gets a ban or a warning, the display name of their account will be reset to their username, even if the reason for the ban or warning is unrelated to the display name. However, this does not always happen.
A Roblox Display Name gives you the opportunity to add another personal stamp to your avatar, along with customizing its appearance, though your Display Name appears in other areas too . Let's face it, some of us were a bit hasty or short-sighted in choosing permanent Usernames for our Roblox accounts, and now that time has passed the name we picked may no longer reflect who we are. That's where your Display Name comes in, as it allows you to change how other players see you in the virtual world, so here's everything you need to know about how to get or change your Roblox Display Name.
Your Roblox Display Name works differently to your Username, as a Username is unique to each account and is marked with an @ symbol at the start, so it can always be used to identify a specific player. Your Display Name, on the other hand, doesn't have to be unique within the game and you can change it regularly, which gives you much more scope to be creative and express yourself. Once your Roblox Display Name has been set, you'll see it in places such as your profile and chat, in search and people lists, as well as hovering above your avatar's head while you're in an experience.
To get or change a Roblox Display Name, you should first log in to your Account Info page under Settings, then select the edit button next to the Display Name entry above your Username. Type in your new Display Name, then press Save to lock it in – make sure you're happy with it first, as you can only change it once every seven days.
Display Names can only include letters, numbers, and underscores
Roblox announced on Feb. 9 that Display Names will be coming to the gaming platform, and on Feb. 18 , Display Names were released for one hour in Germany, but they were then removed.
For example, on Instagram, someone’s handle or username may be @InternetHuman8675, but their Display Name could just be Internet Human or Katie or Name! A Display Name is whatever we want to be called, and however we want other Roblox users we interact with to identify us. While Roblox users will still be able to see our usernames, our Display Names will appear “in chat, player lists, or above your in-game character’s head.”
The gaming platform, Roblox, has over 150 million users, all with their own unique usernames. However, the Roblox developers announced on Feb. 9 that Display Names will be coming to Roblox, although they didn’t say when. This means that Roblox users will now be able to have their own Display Name and username.
Once Display Names come to Roblox, we’ll only be able to change them every seven days. However, this is way better than the current situation, when we can’t change our username at all (unless we pay).
Display Names will also need to be verified by filters so that they are game appropriate for all ages, and they’ll need to stay between three and 20 characters, so they’re not totally fair game but still much more freeing than usernames.
The other major difference between Display Names and usernames is that we’ll actually be able to change our Display Names. We might have signed up for a Roblox account randomly, picked some random username, and then were stuck with it because it costs 1,000 Robux to change (the equivalent of about $12), so Display Names will be our new best friend.
However, when it comes to DisplayNames, they can be changed once per week, are not unique, and can be a hindrance when attempting to uniquely identify someone through DisplayNames.
You can trivially prevent display names from affecting humanoid name labels in your game with a simple server script.
Conmmander February 18, 2021, 4:02pm #1. As a Developer, it is currently hard to completely remove the functionality of Display Names. Forking chat is relatively easy, but Roblox does not provide the leaderboard to fork, nor other aspects of a game, making us learn how to do this and spend hours of work that we wouldn’t need.
Make sure you are happy with your new name before you change it, as otherwise you will be forced to keep it for an entire week before you can alter it again. When it comes to display names there are also no restrictions to how many players can have the same display name, and this might be something that Slenders tend to have in common.
It is easier to do than you might think, but there are a few rules to keep in mind before you make the adjustment. Your name defines who you are in the world of Roblox and you deserve to have a display name that makes you proud.
Just be aware before you decide to change it that everyone on Roblox will be able to see it. This is why it is so important to follow the guideline that encourages you to avoid adding any personal information .

Roblox can fix it though, is by adding an option in settings that allows you to decide if people can use your name or not.
