Do not union multiple parts - this does not stop lag. Every time studio runs the place, every individual part is loaded and unioned in the order they’re unioned in studio - it causes more lag. Instead, you should export the parts as a.obj file, and then insert them through a MeshPart.
A large part of the cost lies in using fog and materials (although not so much anymore), as well as how many parts you have. The other major factor is how many loose (unanchored) parts you have. ROBLOX utilizes a model known as "Broad Phase" to sort out the physics engine, and figure out what parts interact with each other.

A union will only render its outside surface, while a series of parts will have a lot of internal geometry that the union will eliminate. He brings an offering of a rose, accept or not. Made a realistic staircase. Did you know shedletsky has an epic face next to his username?
Overall, it doesn't reduce lag and can do the opposite, create more lag and issues.
Use parts. Parts. All basic parts in Roblox have minimal physical properties that needed to be stimulated, while Unions comes in infinite amount of shapes, when you create a Union, Roblox would need to make physical calculations accurate for your game, which can drastically decrease performance.
One way to avoid lag is to try and limit the amount of meshes you are using in your game. You can try and make one whole mesh car without huge details. One example could be the cars in ER:LC. They contain one mesh model (with no inside detail) and makes the game less laggy for everyone.
When creating a UnionOperation, or a Union, Roblox will generate its triangles/topology so you will be able to visualize what the object looks like. However, Roblox isn't perfect and it ends up creating unnecessary triangles, causing them to be rendered, and overtime these can cause performance lag.
Unions don't reduce lag nor cause it. the amount of polygons still say the same so your not reducing on that front, the only reason they exist is to work with the negate feature.
In the 2018 Roblox Developer Conference, it was announced that meshes are indeed better than unions.
Through my experience as a modeler and an inexperienced builder, I've come to know that triangles, unions, and parts all-cause lag however you'll only need an overbearing amount of them to actually cause harmful lag to your game.
They can only create lag if your store is unanchored. If the store is anchored there is no point in having all those welds.
Long answer: Meshes by themselves don't cause lag; Instead, the way you create and use them determines your game's performance.
