To expand your map all you have to do is go into roblox studio then go to workspace press on it, you should see something called baseplate press on it now if you look at the bottom where it shows the colors and material keep scrolling until you see lock when you see its locked just unlock it by presses the check mark (make sure that there is no check mark beside it) and boom you can make it bigger or smaller. here’s a youtube tutorial just in case video.
Newer ROBLOX games are using smooth terrain because generally looks better. ROBLOX is constantly evolving and become less parts and more meshes and non-geometric objects. If you pick Smooth Terrain you will be following the current trend, if you go with Triangular Terrain you will be going old school.

For a open world game I would recommend making the map as big as the baseplate. You could just union as many parts as you can until weird collison boxes spawn to reduce lag. If you’re building a map that is a city I would make it a bit smaller than the size of the baseplate. Alright, thanks for the feedback.
A map can be as large as you want it to be as long as you stay in the range between low details and high details. I have built gigantic maps before that were 60k bricks or even 90k bricks at times which people would be astonished at the fact that It does not lag.

To make your base bigger, you simply copy the baseplate you currently have, and move it right next to this baseplate. Bam! The baseplate is locked by default. Select it in the the Explorer menu (it's below Workspace ), uncheck the Locked property, and scale it to a bigger size using the Scale feature.
In Roblox, parts can't be sized smaller than 0.05, 0.05, 0.05. I'd recommend you use a scaling plug-in from the library to resize your model. Alternatively, you can use SpecialMesh or BlockMesh objects and set their Scale property to achieve the size you need.
